VJ-ADVANCE Articulating Video Borescope

VJ-Advance Borescope Technical Features

The Articulating Tip

The articulating tip, called a "bending section", consists of a series of hinged, metal, hollow discs, each set 90 degrees to its adjacent disc. This component is made by hand under a microscope.

The Coil Pipe

The bending section is manipulated by 4 guide wires, each of which is housed within its own sheath. The sheath is called a "coil pipe", and a set of 4 sheaths with 4 guide wires, fully assembled, is called a "coil pipe assembly". The four control wires are connected to the joystick mechanism at four different points. When the joystick is moved in a certain direction, the appropriate control wire is pulled (and tension on its opposite wire is relieved) and the bending section bends.

Insertion tubes on the VJ-ADV are not interchangeable. This is because the bending section is hardwired to the joystick via the articulation control wires, and because the wires and electronics that control the camera and LEDs are wired directly to the pcb in the base of the unit.

Video Capturing

With the VJ-ADV there are three ways to view the images captured by the camera:

1. A flip-up 3.5" monitor. This is obviously the easiest way. At first, this may seem like too small a monitor, especially in this age of ever larger LCD TVs and computer monitors. But you will be surprised at how well this monitor serves the purpose. When one person is doing an inspection, this is the best option. It also keeps the unit extremely compact, lightweight and portable, which is a critical feature in many inspection scenarios.

2. Via a small, circular output port on the bottom of the VJ-ADV that allows connection to a standard TV or portable DVD player (provided the DVD player has a "Video IN" port). The cable for this connection is included with the unit. This viewing option works well when two or more people need to see the inspection, or in training situations when an instructor is showing several students how to conduct an inspection or what to look for during an inspection. Portable DVD players are a good option because they usually come with rechargeable batteries, thus maintaining some degree of portability. It is important to note that the same output port on the base of the VJ-ADV that provides the TV/RCA output, and the same cable, are used to provide AC power to the unit, when used with the included AC adapter.

3. A USB port at the base of the unit, and a cable is included that can connect the VJ-ADV to a PC or laptop computer. Also included is a CD that contains a simple imaging software program that can be loaded onto a computer to facilitate the viewing of images and video from the VJ-ADV and recording and capturing video and images directly to an attached computer. This option works best if the user needs to record full-motion video of the inspection. The software program can be set to record up to 30 frames per second, which is full motion video. The resulting file will be very large, but on a PC this may be a minor issue.
